Dr Yeshi Dhonden at Dharamsala

Dharamsala has acquired a name for its beautiful and scenic locale, the spiritual rehabilitation and the knack for undertaking adventurous sports among the valleys and slopes of Kangra. However, apart from all these the place receives about as much visitors for Tibetan medicine and treatment by Tibetan doctors. Among all others, still surviving and a legend is Dr. Yeshi Dhonden. He is the personal physician for the 14th Dalai Lama and had come down to settle at Dharamsala as an exile.

History of Yeshi Dhonden

Surviving as one of the miraculous healers, Yeshi Dhonden has an interesting past. He was born in the Tibetan month of Fire Rabbit in the year 1927. At the age of six, he was sent to a small monastery in Tibet by his parents. The striking memorizing power possessed by this little boy was an awe for all in the monastery. Hence, at the age of eleven he was sent to Men Tsee Khang, the Medical College in Lhasa (Capital of Tibet). The special power in him had enabled the boy to learn the four Medical Tantras of Tibetan medical science. He then underwent formal training under the then personal physician of the 13th Dalai Lama.



His medical career commenced in 1951 when he came back to his native place. However the upheaval in the community of Tibet had leaded his way to India after H.H. Dalai Lama. He began treating the Tibetan refugees who fled from Chinese communists in 1959. In 1960 he was called for being the personal physician for H.H. Dalai Lama at his personal request. He moved to Dharamsala at this juncture.

One of the greatest achievements of Dr. Yeshi Dhonden at Dharamsala is the foundation of Men Tsee Khang, the Tibetan Medical College at Dharamsala. He was the Director and principal of this college till 1979. The college aims at imparting medical degree to the students interested in Tibetan Medicine. Furthermore it has been developed to help the refugees coming from Tibet and help older people in their ailments.

Cancer Treatment at Dhonden’s in Dharamsala

Dr. Yeshi Dhonden has been famous for treating his patients with better results than any other stream of medical science available today. However, the most noticeable achievement has been in treating cancer. The doctor has been successful in treating thousands of patients from all over the world who are affected with various kinds of cancer. He prescribes Tibetan herbal therapies for his patients which are far more effective in many cases. The therapies are prescribed with or without the addition of the Western or modern allopathic treatment processes.

The rate of success has been seen within women mostly suffering from breast cancer. Leukemia and stomach cancers are also treated at Yeshi Dhonden’s Cancer Treatment Center in Dharamsala.

Meeting Dr. Dhonden at Dharamsala

The doctor can only attend to 60 patients a day. Hence the patients who are interested in meeting Dr. Yeshi Dhonden must follow certain rules. This includes acquiring an appointment for the next day. The patient or his relatives must stand in the queue to get an appointment scheduled for the next day. The person must be in the queue from 5am though the coupons are distributed at 2pm. This happens due to the immense number of people trying to visit the doctor.

The patient must also observe strict restriction from spicy food, alcohol, coffee and black tea on the previous night of the appointment. The doctor meets patients from Monday till Friday and on Sundays from 9.30 am to 2.30 pm. Clinic is closed on Saturdays.
